Main Road, Howick
Main Road in Howick between the Prospect Road intersection and the Umgeni River Bridge has been widened from a two lane road to a five-lane road (4 lanes and a right turning lane). These improvements and widening were funded by the uMngeni Municipality through a Municipal Infrastructure Grant from Central Government.
The uMngeni Municipality appointed Sukuma Consulting Engineers to design and supervise construction of the widening of this section of road as the first stage of alleviating traffic congestion on this busy southern arterial into the town. The road widening incorporates 2 lanes in both directions along with turning lanes, bus/taxi lay-byes, pedestrian sidewalks and an improved intersection into the Fairways on Main Centre. In addition, new state-of-the-art street lighting has been installed to improve safety along this busy section of road.
The current congestion at the Umgeni River Bridge will be dealt with in the future by splitting Main Road at the Exchange Lane intersection and taking 2 lanes through Exchange Lane across the Umgeni River on a new bridge directly into Somme Street.
